Q: My grandmother has recently passed away and my uncle will soon be holding a 40 days khatam with a meal. I strongly do not believe in this however my father is insistent we attend. We have had numerous arguments about this matter and I’m not sure what to do. I may not be a perfect Muslim so he uses this against me.
A: These are innovatory practices and they have no basis in Deen. The correct way is that each person should recite Qur'an individually in his own time and convey the reward to the deceased.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
