Men wearing clothing with embroidery

Q: Are men allowed to have embroidery on their clothes? Even little bit embroidery around the neck of the kurta/shirts. I understand heavy and lot of embroidery is a women thing and must be avoided but nowadays we find kurtas/and shirts with little bit work around neck, should it be worn by men or should the garments of the men be plain?

Secondly, it is in a Hadith not to copy non-Muslims. Nowadays Muslim men wear pants and shirts which I think is a western originated dress. You are treated as a weird person if you don't wear, so what should be the ruling about it?

Thirdly, I read somewhere that men should also not wear tight clothes, is it true? Then pants are fitted garments?

Fourthly I also read that men should also not dress up in a way that attracts the opposite sex.

Please guide me how much of the above information is correct or not. And what should be the ruling about the other questions I asked?

A: There are two aspects in Shari'ah; the first is jamaal (for one to be in a presentable state, clean and tidy) and the second is zinaat (beautification and adornment). As far as the first aspect is concerned, then Shrari'ah commands that one's clothing be clean, tidy and in a presentable state at all times. This relates to men and women. As far as adornment and beautification (e.g. cosmetics, etc) is concerned, this is exclusive to women. Men are commanded to refrain from these things. Hence it is incorrect for men to wear kurtas that have embroidery on it.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: I sent you some questions earlier and got the reply but only for first question. Could you please reply to other 3 questions as well?

A:

  1. The clothing (i.e. plain, loose, unrevealing and unfashionable clothing) that is worn by all classes of people, Muslims as well as non Muslims is permissible. However, if the clothing is exclusive to any religion or any sect, group, etc then it will be impermissible for a Muslim to wear such clothing.
  2. Tight fitting clothing for men which reveals the shape of the body between the navel and the knee is impermissible.
  3. Yes, this is correct. Similarly, the unisex clothing which is in vogue as well as clothing which creates confusion and doubt among people, whether the one wearing it is a male or female is against the Islamic culture.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
