Q: My daughter's husband passed away, she is now in iddat. We are so confused as to the rules about her going out in our backyard. We were told that she cannot go in our backyard if we do not have a cover - something like she cannot be under the sky. Basically, we want to know if she is allowed to go out and sit in the backyard.
A: There is no such thing that she cannot be under the open sky, provided it is within her own yard.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
للمعتدة أن تخرج من بيتها إلى صحن الدار وتبيت في أي منزل شاءت إلا أن يكون في الدار منازل لغيره فلا تخرج من بيتها إلى تلك المنازل (الفتاوى الهندية 1/535)
وللمعتدة أن تخرج من بيتها إلى صحن الدار وتلبث في أي منزل شاءت إلا أن يكون في الدار منازل لغيرهم فلا تخرج من بيتها إلى تلك المنازل (المحيط البرهاني 3/467)
