Replying to the salaam

Q: If someone gave salaam and one replied and they didn’t hear the reply or one did not reply, would the person later on have to walk up to the person and reply?

A: If he did not hear the salaam, then it is not compulsory upon him to reply to the salaam. If he heard the salaam, then it is compulsory upon him to reply to the salaam. If he did not reply at that time, he will be sinful. Later on, he will not be able to reply to the salaam as the occasion has passed. He should make taubah for not fulfilling the obligation.
