Taubah and Istighfaar

Q:

1. Is saying Astaghfirullah throughout one’s life fardh?

2. If a person repented without saying Astaghfirullah what is the consequence?

A: When one commits a sin, then it is compulsory (fardh) for one to make istighfaar and taubah.

Istighfaar (Repentance) means for one to express remorse from one's heart for committing the sin. Together with expressing remorse with one's heart, it is good and better that one also expresses remorse with one's tongue.

Taubah means for one to make a firm resolve not to commit the sin in the future and to reform one's condition. One who makes taubah sincerely, his taubah will definitely be accepted by Allah Ta'ala.

One should understand that taubah has three basic elements:
(1) To discharge all past obligations, be it the obligations which one owes to Allah Ta'ala or the obligations which one owes to people.
(2) To make a firm resolve never to commit those sins again.
(3) To express remorse from one's heart for the wrongs that one has committed.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
