Incident of a Sahaabi's mill producing flour on its own
Q: When in jamaat, I heard this story being narrated in the bayaans often, under the quality of salaah. The story is as follows:
A Sahaabi (radhiyallahu anhu) had no food in his home. He then went to the masjid and read 2 rakaats of salaah and returned home. He found that there was still no food, and then returned to the masjid to read another 2 rakaats of salaah and returned again to still find no food. For the third time he done this. On his return after the third time, he found that the mill was producing flour on its own. He filled all the containers in his home, and then opened the mill and it stopped making flour.
When he reported the incident to Rasoolullaah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Rasoolullaah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) told him that if he did not open the mill, it would have continued making flour until the day of qiyaamah.
I want to find out if the above story is authentic.
A: There is a hadith reported in Musnad Ahmad, Musnad Bazzaar and Mu'jamul Awsat of Tabraani that shows that a similar incident transpired among the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu 'anhum). The hadith is authentic, however, there are some variations in the details of the incident. The incident is as follows:
There was a person who came home and found his family in hunger and starvation. Upon seeing them in difficulty, he left his home and went out of the town to an open land (to beseech Allah Ta'ala and beg His assistance).
When his wife had seen this (that her husband had left the home due to experiencing grief over his family's condition), she went to the grinding mill, cleaned it and prepared it to grind the flour. Thereafter, she went to the oven and lit it. She then made dua saying, "O Allah, bless us with sustenance."
After doing this, she suddenly saw that the bowl (under the mill) was full (of flour) and the oven was also full (of baked bread).
When the husband returned home, he asked his wife, "Did you acquire any food while I was away?" His wife replied, "Yes, we have acquired sustenance from our Rabb." Thereafter, the husband stood up to look at the grinding mill (and lifted it to see where the flour was coming from, whereupon the mill immediately stopped producing flour).
When this was mentioned to Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), he said, "Had he not lifted it, it would have continued to produce flour till the day of Qiyaamah."
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
وعن أبي هريرة قال: دخل رجل على أهله، فلما رأى ما بهم من الحاجة خرج إلى البرية، فلما رأت امرأته قامت إلى الرحا فوضعتها، وإلى التنور فسجرته، ثم قالت: اللهم ارزقنا، فنظرت فإذا الجفنة قد امتلأت. قال: وذهبت إلى التنور فوجدته ممتلئا، قال: فرجع الزوج وقال: أصبتم بعدي شيئا؟ قالت امرأته: نعم. من ربنا، قام إلى الرحا فرفعها، فذكر ذلك للنبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - فقال: " أما إنه لو لم يرفعها لم تزل تدور إلى يوم القيامة. رواه أحمد، والبزار، وقال: فقالت امرأته: اللهم ارزقنا ما نطحن، وما نعجن، ونخبز، فإذا الجفنة ملأى خبزا، والرحا تطحن، والتنور ملأى جنوب شواء، فجاء زوجها فقال: عندكم شيء؟ قالت: رزق الله - أو قد رزق الله - فرفع الرحا، فكنس حولها، فقال رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم -: لو تركها لطحنت إلى يوم القيامة. ورواه الطبراني في الأوسط بنحوه، ورجالهم رجال الصحيح غير شيخ البزار، وشيخ الطبراني، وهما ثقتان.
