Bringing blessings and peace in the home

Q: My father constructed a comfortable house for us. However, from the time we started living in the house, my complete family, including my parents, my siblings and I, are not happy at all. We do not know what to do and why our hearts are not at peace in this house. Kindly suggest some solution because we are extremely tense.

A: Ensure that all the A'amaal (actions) of the home are in accordance to the Sunnah and there is nothing found in the home that will attract the anger and wrath of Allah Ta'ala (e.g. pictures of animate objects, music, committing sins, etc.).

Generally, people's greater concern is to increase the material things of the home and improve the standard of living so that they can feel comfortable living in the home. However, just as these things are important to some extent, the greater focus should be to make the home a home of barakah and blessings and a home that attracts the mercy of Allah Ta'ala.

This barakah, blessings and mercy will be obtained when the inmates of the home refrain from sins as well as all those activities which are displeasing to Allah Ta'ala, and they engage in those activities which are in accordance to the Sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam).

When the activities of the home are not in conformity to the Sunnah, Salaah is not performed on time and nor is the Qur'aan recited in the home, then evil influences, shayaateen, etc. enter the home.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) reports: "In the home where the Qur'aan is recited, the household members increase, virtues and blessings multiply, angels descend upon them and Shaitaan leaves the house, whereas the home in which Qur'aan is not recited, life therein becomes straitened and devoid of blessings, angels leave the home and Shaitaan takes control of it."

Hazrat Ibn Mas'ood (radhiyallahu anhu) is reported to have said: "A deserted home is one in which the Qur'aan is not recited."

Therefore, you and your family should ensure that you all perform salaah on the prescribed time. The males should perform their fardh salaah in the musjid with jamaat, and the females should perform their salaah within the home.

Similarly, the entire family should allocate some time daily to make ta'leem of the fazaail kitaabs (Fazaail A'amaal and Fazaail-e-Sadaqaat), make zikr, read Durood Shareef and recite the Quraan Shareef. Similarly, every Thursday they should make ta'leem of the Fazaail Durood, and once a week, they should make ta'leem from Seeratul Mustafa. At the end of the taleem, collective dua may be made for the family members and for the entire ummah.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
