Raising funds for a masjid by having recreational activities and auctions

Q:

1. Can recreational activities (golf, paddle tennis, soccer, etc.) be used for fundraising for a Masjid?

2. Can an auction event where items are sold be used for fundraising for a Masjid?

A:

1. No. Using sports and entertainment as a source of earning money is impermissible. The fuqaha have clearly stated that such an agreement and contract is invalid. (Mahmood-ul-Fatawa, vol. 8, p. 193)

2. As far as our knowledge is concerned there is nothing wrong in an auction as such. However, if there are valid reasons to doubt its validity, we may be informed of the same.
