Performing salaah without a kurta
Q: Can a person read salaah with a Topee only and no Kurta?
A: If you are referring to a male performing his salaah with a topee while wearing pants and shirt, then the salaah will be valid as the body is covered with clothing. However, it should be borne in mind that even though the salaah is valid, one will not receive the full reward of performing the salaah according to the sunnah manner. Performing the salaah according to the sunnah manner will earn one the full reward of the salaah.
The sunnah manner in performing the salaah is considered in five aspects:
1) Fulfilling the postures of the salaah correctly.
2) Performing the salaah with complete devotion and concentration.
3) Performing the salaah in the sunnah attire
4) Performing salaah upon the prescribed time
5) Performing the salaah in the musjid with jamaat for males (and in the confines of the home for women).
When one performs the salaah according to the sunnah manner, then one receives the full reward of the salaah. Hence, the Hadith has emphasized the importance of performing the salaah with the above mentioned five aspects.
Therefore, it is in keeping with respect that the salaah be performed while wearing the sunnah attire (i.e. while wearing a topee and a flowing, loose, non-transparent garment e.g. kurta, jubbah, etc.). Performing salaah in the western attire i.e. while wearing a shirt and pants is against the sunnah. Apart from this, many a time, the pants are tight fitting and the contours of the body (i.e. the satr area between the navel and knees) are visible. Performing salaah in such tight fitting clothing is not permissible.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
حفِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوتِ وَالصَّلوةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلَّـهِ قنِتِينَ ﴿البقرة: ٢٣٨﴾
إِنَّ الصَّلوةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتبًا مَّوْقُوتًا ﴿النساء ١٠٣﴾
عن أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: من صلى الصلوات لوقتها وأسبغ لها وضوءها وأتم لها قيامها وخشوعها وركوعها وسجودها خرجت وهي بيضاء مسفرة تقول: حفظك الله كما حفظتني ومن صلاها لغير وقتها ولم يسبغ لها وضوءها ولم يتم لها خشوعها ولا ركوعها ولا سجودها خرجت وهي سوداء مظلمة تقول: ضيعك الله كما ضيعتني حتى إذا كانت حيث شاء الله لفت كما يلف الثوب الخلق ثم ضرب بها وجهه رواه الطبراني في الأوسط (الترغيب و الترهيب، الرقم: 584)
عن عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال: حافظوا على هؤلاء الصلوات الخمس حيث ينادى بهن فإنهن من سنن الهدى وإن الله شرع لنبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم سنن الهدى ولقد رأيتنا وما يتخلف عنها إلا منافق بين النفاق ولقد رأيتنا وإن الرجل ليهادى بين الرجلين حتى يقام فى الصف وما منكم من أحد إلا وله مسجد فى بيته ولو صليتم فى بيوتكم وتركتم مساجدكم تركتم سنة نبيكم صلى الله عليه وسلم ولو تركتم سنة نبيكم صلى الله عليه وسلم لكفرتم (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: 550)
(و) كره (كفه) أي رفعه ولو لتراب كمشمر كم أو ذيل (وعبثه به) أي بثوبه (وبجسده) للنهي إلا لحاجة ولا بأس به خارج صلاة (وصلاته في ثياب بذلة) يلبسها في بيته (ومهنة) أي خدمة إن له غيرها وإلا لا (وأخذ درهم) ونحوه (في فيه لم يمنعه من القراء) فلو منعه تفسد (وصلاته حاسرا) أي كاشفا (رأسه) ولا بأس به للتذلل وأما للإهانة بها فكفر ولو سقطت قلنسوته فإعادتها أفضل إلا إذا احتاجت لتكوير أو عمل كثير (الدر المختار 1/640)
قال العلامة ابن عابدين رحمه الله (قوله: وصلاته في ثياب بذلة) بكسر الباء الموحدة وسكون الذال المعجمة الخدمة والابتذال وعطف المهنة عليها عطف تفسير وهي بفتح الميم وكسرها مع سكون الهاء وأنكر الأصمعي الكسر حلية قال في البحر: وفسرها في شرح الوقاية بما يلبسه في بيته ولا يذهب به إلى الأكابر والظاهر أن الكراهة تنزيهية اه (رد المحتار 1/640)
