Supporting sports teams and watching sports
Q: Is it permissible for males or females to play sports or to watch it?
Similarly, is it permissible to support sport teams?
A: As far as going to watch these sports at the stadium, etc. is concerned, then it is not permissible. In these sports events, there is intermingling of sexes and the environment is one of sin. Music, gambling, drinking and a whole host of vices and sins are prevalent in such places. As far as the players are concerned, then many a time their satr is exposed while playing and the match is sponsored by companies that promote haraam.
Hence, it is not permissible for any believer to be present at such places. Being present will cause one to become a victim of the wrath of Allah Ta'ala. Allah Ta`ala mentions in the Quraan Shareef, "Do not sit in the company of the wrongdoers after realising their wrong."
A believer should understand that the purpose for him coming into the world is for him to strive to acquire the pleasure of Allah Ta'ala through preparing for the life of the aakhirah. Hence, a believer at all times should aim for the higher objectives which Allah Ta'ala has created him for, such as upholding deen, spreading the sunnah, carrying out righteous works, showing kindness to the creation, as well as encouraging others to do the same.
A believer should not emulate the kuffaar and follow them in their culture, ways and value system such as getting involved in amusements, sports and vain activities. Similarly, it is not befitting for a believer to promote these kuffaar sporting activities in any way as he will be emulating the kuffaar and supporting them in their agenda of leading people towards sin.

وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ الَّذِينَ يَخُوضُونَ فِي آيتِنَا فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ وَإِمَّا يُنسِيَنَّكَ الشَّيْطنُ فَلَا تَقْعُدْ بَعْدَ الذِّكْرَىٰ مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الظّلِمِينَ (سورة الأنعام: 68)
وَلَن تَرْضَىٰ عَنكَ الْيَهُودُ وَلَا النَّصرىٰ حَتَّىٰ تَتَّبِعَ مِلَّتَهُمْ قُلْ إِنَّ هُدَى اللَّـهِ هُوَ الْهُدَىٰ وَلَئِنِ اتَّبَعْتَ أَهْوَاءَهُم بَعْدَ الَّذِي جَاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ مَا لَكَ مِنَ اللَّـهِ مِن وَلِيٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ ﴿البقرة: ١٢٠﴾
يأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ادْخُلُوا فِي السِّلْمِ كَافَّةً وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوتِ الشَّيْطنِ إِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ ﴿البقرة: ٢٠٨﴾
يأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَىٰ أَوْلِيَاءَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظّلِمِينَ ﴿المائدة: ٥١﴾
أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنكُمْ عَبَثًا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَ ﴿المؤمنون: ١١٥﴾
عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه عن أبيه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال لا ينظر الرجل إلى عورة الرجل ولا المرأة إلى عورة المرأة ولا يفضي الرجل إلى الرجل في ثوب واحد ولا تفضي المرأة إلى المرأة في الثوب الواحد (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 338)
عن علي رضي الله عنه أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال لا تبرز فخذك ولا تنظرن إلى فخذ حي ولا ميت (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: 3140)
عن عمرو بن الحارث أن رجلا دعا عبد الله بن مسعود إلى وليمة فلما جاء ليدخل سمع لهوا فلم يدخل فقال ما لك رجعت قال إني سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول من كثر سواد قوم فهو منهم ومن رضي عمل قوم كان شريكا في عملهم (إتحاف الخيرة المهرة، الرقم: 3297)
عن عبيد بن عمير قال: صليت خلف عمر رضي الله عنه صلاة الغداة فقنت فيها بعد الركوع وقال في قنوته: اللهم إنا نستعينك ونستغفرك , ونثني عليك الخير كله ونشكرك ولا نكفرك ونخلع ونترك من يفجرك اللهم إياك نعبد ولك نصلي , ونسجد وإليك نسعى ونحفد نرجو رحمتك ونخشى عذابك إن عذابك بالكفار ملحق (شرح معاني الآثار، الرقم: 1475)
