Maximum amount of rakaats one can perform in tahajjud
Q: What is the maximum amount of rakaats one can perform in tahajjud with making salaam in the end? I heard that the most is eight rakaats, but can a person perform more than eight rakaats with making salaam at the end?
A: In the Hanafi mazhab, there are two opinions in regard to the maximum amount of rakaats one can perform with salaam at the end during the night salaah (qiyaamul layl or tahajjud salaah).
According to majority of the fuqaha, the maximum amount of rakaats one can perform with one salaam at the end is eight rakaats.
According to these fuqaha, performing more than eight rakaats is makrooh.
According to some fuqaha (the likes of Allamah Sarakhsi and the author of Khulaasatul Fataawa), one can perform any amount of rakaats with one salaam at the end (even if the number of rakaats exceeds eight rakaats).
Both these opinions can be practised upon. However, the first opinion is more preferred.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
(وتكره الزيادة على أربع في نفل النهار وعلى ثمان ليلا بتسليمة) لأنه لم يرد (والأفضل فيهما الرباع بتسليمة) وقالا: في الليل المثنى أفضل، قيل وبه يفتى
قال العلامة ابن عابدين رحمه الله: (قوله لأنه لم يرد) أي لم يرد عنه صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه زاد على ذلك والأصل فيه التوقيف كما في فتح القدير أي فما لم يوقف على دليل المشروعية لا يحل فعله بل يكره أي اتفاقا كما في منية المصلي أي من أئمتنا الثلاثة نعم وقع الاختلاف بين المشايخ المتأخرين في الزيادة على الثمانية ليلا فقال بعضهم لا يكره وإليه ذهب شمس الأئمة السرخسي وصححه في الخلاصة وصحح في البدائع الكراهة قال: وعليه عامة المشايخ وتمامه في الحلية والبحر (رد المحتار 2/15-16)
