Woman going to a gym that has a separate female section

Q: I would like to know if going to gym that has a separate lady’s section which is closed off and we cannot be seen at all and there are only females in that class. Will it be ok to attend gym classes there?

A: The hadith commands that a woman remains within the confines of her home and does not leave her home except for a valid need. In this lies her deeni security as well as protection for her respect and chastity. Leaving the home to go to a gym is not a recognized need in shariah for which a woman is permitted to leave her home. Most of the problems and fitnahs that take place today are on account of not adhering to the commands of shariah.

Even if the area is secluded from males, the environment is an environment where women generally do not dress appropriately and modestly. Apart from this, it is possible that while remaining in the gym, one will be videoed by someone without one's knowledge, or in most places, there are cctvs which video the activities of the environment. In this way, a woman's respect will be violated and viewed by non-mahram males.

Therefore, it is not permissible for a woman to leave her home to attend the gym. When it is possible for a woman to exercise within the home for her wellbeing and fitness, then there is no need for her to attend the gym for this purpose.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
