When will a person be regarded as a Sayyid?

Q: Such child, whose father is a descendant of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) through his mother, is he considered to be descendant of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) or not?

A: The Fuqahaa mention that a person will be regarded as a sayyid if his father is a sayyid. Hence, if a person's mother is a sayyid and not his father, he will not be regarded as a sayyid, though he will be worthy of honour and respect on account of his mother.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
