Eating past sehri time for a nafl fast

Q: A brother ate past Fajr starting time for his nafl fast and so his fast is broken, and he will need to do qadha. However will he also need to practice imsaak throughout the day?

A: If he continued to eat and exceeded the time, then his fast did not commence. Hence, the fast of that day will not take place and since he did not break the fast, he will not have to keep a qadha.

Since the fast did not commence at all, one may eat throughout the day.

The law of refraining from eating only applies to the fast one had broken in the month of Ramadhaan. It does not apply to a nafl fast which one had broken out of the month of Ramadhaan.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
