Correcting a person who misinterprets the Hadith

Q: Should a person be corrected if they misuse a hadith or misinterpret the hadith?

If yes, what is the right etiquette for doing it?

A: Our deen is an amaanat from Allah Ta'ala, and the right of this amaanat is that it should be protected and honoured. Interpreting Ahaadith based on one's own mind and limited reasoning, without having the necessary knowledge of deen and expertise in the science of Hadith, is incorrect and is against the right of this amaanat. This leads to additions, subtractions or even innovations coming about in deen.

The great Muhaddith, Imaam Muhammed bin Seereen (rahimahullah), has mentioned, "Indeed, this knowledge (of shari'ah) is your deen, therefore beware of whom you take your deen from."

The correct thing for such a person to do is to refer to an Aalim who is well-versed in the science of Hadith and also has sound understanding in the other branches of deen.

Therefore, you should advise this person not to rely on self-study or interpret the Hadith according to his limited understanding, but rather refer to the rightly-guided Ulama.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
