Distinguishing between a test from Allah Ta'ala and a punishment

Q: How can I distinguish between a test from Allah and a punishment?

A: At the time of a difficulty, if you remain firm on deen and obedient to Allah Ta'ala, you are happy with the decree of Allah Ta'ala, and you do not become frustrated and lose yourself among people, then this is a sign that this is a test from Allah Ta'ala, not a punishment. 

However, if you do not fulfil the command of Allah Ta'ala, or you are displeased with the decree of Allah Ta'ala thereby becoming frustrated and losing oneself with people, then this is a sign that this difficulty is a form of punishment for you.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
