Q: What are the conditions for the validity of pelting?
A: There are 10 conditions for the validity of pelting (rami):
1. To throw the stones. If a person does not throw the stones but merely places the stones at the Jamarah then the pelting will be invalid. However, if a person drops his stones, it will be valid, though it will be makrooh and contrary to the sunnah.
2. Throwing with one’s hands. If a person shot the pebble with a bow or something similar to a bow (e.g. a sling) or he kicked it with his foot, the pelting will be invalid.
3. The stones should fall close to the Jamarah within the radius of 3 arms’ length (3 ziraa which is approximately one and a half metres) around the Jamarah. If it falls beyond the radius of 3 arms’ length, then the pelting will not be valid. It is not necessary that the stones hit the pillar itself, but they should fall within the radius of 3 arms’ length around the Jamarah for the pelting to be valid.
4. The pebbles should fall on the Jamarah or close to the Jamarah through the action of the one throwing. If one had thrown the pebble and it fell onto a person’s back, and the person on whose back it had fallen picked it up and threw it at the Jamarah, the pelting will not be valid on behalf of the first person.
5. Every pebble should be thrown individually. If a person threw all the pebbles at once, or many pebbles at once, only the pelting of one pebble will be valid.
6. Every person who is well and is able to pelt himself should do so himself. If such a person appoints another person to pelt on his behalf, the pelting will not be valid.
7. The pebbles should be from the substance of the earth (e.g. from sand, stone, etc.).
8. Since the purpose of pelting is to disgrace Shaitaan, the substance with which one pelts (i.e. pebbles) should be such that throwing it at someone is generally an indication of disgrace. Hence, some of the Fuqahaa are of the opinion that it is not permissible to throw rubies and other precious stones at the Jamarah, as this does not indicate towards disgrace. However, other Fuqahaa are of the opinion that since these precious stones are created from the substance of the earth, if one throws them at the Jamaraat, the pelting will be valid.
9. The pelting should be carried out within the time of pelting.
10. At least four of the seven pebbles should be correctly thrown at each Jamarah.

فصل في شرائط الرمي، وهي عشرة: الأول: أن يسمى رميا فلا يصح الوضع إلخ وجاز الطرح لأنه نوع رمي ويكره لأنه ترك السنة، والثاني: الرمي باليد فلا يجزئ الرمي بالقوس ونحوه ولا الرمي بالرجل نقله في المنحة، الثالث: وقوع الحصى بالجمرة أو قريبا منها ... وقدر القريب بثلاثة أذرع والبعيد بما فوقها ...، الرابع: وقوع الحصى في المرمى بفعله، فلو وقعت على ظهر رجل أو محمل وثبتت عليه حتى طرحها الحامل، لم يجز، وكذا لو أخذها الحامل ووضعها ورماها ...، الخامس: تفريق الرميات فلو رمى بسبع حصيات أو أكثر جملة واحدة لا يجزئه إلا عن واحدة ...، السادس: أن يرمي بنفسه فلا تجوز النيابة فيه عند القدرة وتجوز عند العذر فلو رمى عن مريض بأمره أو مغمى عليه ولو بغير أمره أو صبي أو معتوه أو مجنون جاز والأفضل أن توضع الحصاة في أكفهم فيرمونها أو يرمونه بأكفهم ولو رمى عنهم يجزئهم ذلك ...، السابع: أن يكون الحصى من جنس الأرض حجرا كان أو غيره ...، الثامن: أن يكون الحصى مما يكون الرمي به استهانة ...، التاسع: الوقت ...، العاشر: إتيان أكثر عدده في كل يوم فلو تركه فكأنه لم يرم (غنية الناسك صـ 186)
(وكبر بكل حصاة) أي مع كل (منها وقطع التلبية بأولها فلو رمى بأكثر منها) أي السبع (جاز لا لو رمى بالأقل) قال العلامة ابن عابدين رحمه الله: (قوله جاز) أي ويكره لباب (قوله لا لو رمى بالأقل) لأنه إذا ترك أكثر السبع لزمه دم كما لو لم يرم أصلا، وإن ترك أقل منه كثلاث فما دونها فعليه لكل حصاة صدقة كما سيأتي في الجنايات (رد المحتار 2/513)
(وجاز الرمي بكل ما كان من جنس الأرض كالحجر والمدر) والطين والمغرة (و) كل ما (يجوز التيمم به ولو كفا من تراب) فيقوم مقام حصاة واحدة (لا) يجوز (بخشب وعنبر ولؤلؤ) كبار (وجواهر) لأنه إعزاز لا إهانة وقيل يجوز (وذهب وفضة) لأنه يسمى نثارا لا رميا (الدر المختار 2/514)
