Q: I am reading a book called "Death The Final Journey" by Muhammad Abd Al -Mannan. In this book he states that its Sunnat to give Azaan at the grave site quoting Abu Hurairah (Radiyallahu Anhu) in Muslim and Buhkari Sherif. Further he states that in Durre Muktar its sunnat to give Azaan at the grave with it's blessings the Shaytan will run?
A: Giving adhaan at the grave is an unfounded and innovated practice in Deen. It was neither practised in the Mubaarak era of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) nor the era of Sahaabah, Taabi’een, Tab ut-Taabi’een and the centuries that followed. There is no Hadith recorded in Muslim Shareef or Bukhaari Shareef stating that Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (Radiallahu Anhu) commanded or practised giving adhaan at the grave.
Some feel that the adhaan should be called out at the grave to repel the influence of Shaitaan from misleading the deceased however, this notion is incorrect. The Hadith explains that the deeds of man terminate with death. Hence, there is no need for Shaitaan to influence the dead man nor does Shaitaan have the ability to influence him.
It is not appear anywhere in Durre Mukhtaar that calling out the adhaan at the grave is Sunnah. Instead, in Radde Muhtaar (the most famous and accepted commentary of Durre Mukhtaar), it is clearly mentioned that giving adhaan at the grave is an innovated and un-established practice.
