Wife asking the husband to give her an amount as mahr monthly

Q: Can a girl ask for 500 rupees each month as mahr? She has set this as her mahr that each month I must give her 500Rs.

A: This is not permissible. Mahr is stipulated at the commencement of the marriage. Thereafter, the husband will have to provide nafaqah (maintenance) to his wife. For the wife to put this condition that each month the husband will have to give her mahr is against the laws of Shari’ah and hence not permissible.
