Marrying a woman for her deen

Q: Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said that a woman is married for 4 things, one was intelligence. Piety is not mentioned. Someone told me, this means that piety is not important, but iq is. I said, piety IS intelligence. They say it is not. Please guide us on this.

A: The Hadith you are referring to appears in Bukhaari Shareef. The words of the Hadith are as follows:

Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam) said, “A woman is generally married for one of four reasons. For her wealth, beauty, family prestige, and Deen (piety), so when choosing a partner, give preference to the Deen (the piety of the individual), otherwise your hands will become soiled (i.e. if you make the basis of your decision anything else besides Deen, you may regret).” (Saheeh Bukhaari #5090)

In this Hadith, Rasulullah (sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam) encouraged the ummah to make deen the basis of preference. Other things can be considered, but they should not be made the basis of preference.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
