Government allowance

Q: I live in the UK with one kid. My kid's dad lives in another country. Because I am a single mum and have no job, I receive some benefits from the government. I use that money for my and my kids's expenses. I don't work so I don't have anywhere alse to get my zakaat money from. Now my question is can I pay my zakaat from that money (which I receive from the government). Also I sometimes give sadaqa from that money. Is my sadaqa valid? Will Allah accept that sadaqah? The other thing I would like to know is how much money do I need to give in zakaat for gold, and cash?

Marital problems

Q: I am asking this question for my aunt. My husband says that my father passed away when he was young because of my ghuna's. The reason being that he doesn't get along with me. My husband and his family are continuously abrupt and still expect me to do everything for them. My husband has issued me with two talaaqs and threatens me with a third for every difference between us in front of my children and their spouses and my grand children. The reason he does not go through with it is because we are married in community of property and he is afraid to lose the properties that have my name on them. He asks for my consent to sell the properties that have both our names on the deeds. I also have contributed to these properties financially and completed the deals on these houses. He then takes all the cash quietly from the sales and purchases homes for our unmarried daughters without my knowledge. We are living separately at the moment, he with our daughters and I am alone. We also live in different cities. The main reason for this query is that it really hurts me that he says I lost my father due to my ghuna’s. I’ve looked after his mother the best I could but she never appreciated it and told my husband I never did anything for her. Please advise me if his statements are true.

Marital problems

Q: I am married to a man who has already a first wife and children I am his second wife. I am very upset. I married him but my parents don't know About the marriage and his parents either don't know but his wife does. About our marriage, he lives with her I always fight with him over one thing I told him why don't you meet me more and for long time why always for few hours every 2 weeks because he lives three and a half hours far from where I live he doesn't text me in front of her, he doesn't call me in front of her but he does all this when he is with me. I feel hurt with this behaviour. I told him you are not treating me well and fair. All he has to tell me that he will be fair with me once I come live with him but my parents do not know about our nikah. So I told him you have to wait but you have to treat me fair in eyes of Allah. I am your wife. Please help me.

Helping sick people with zakaat money

Q: May I please ask your advice on two matters with regards to Zakaat.

a) My wives uncle recently had both his legs amputated. He is an elderly 78 year old man with two unmarried daughters (both working) and a son. He has a house. They are living from hand to mouth and come from the poor community. Am I allowed to use my zakaat funds to purchase needy medical equipment that he requires, like a hospital bed, a wheelchair etc?

b) In our community there is a lady who has also had both her legs amputated. She lives in a small backyard room. No income. Are we allowed to assist her in settling some monthly accounts like electricity, food, groceries etc with our zakaat funds?

Jumuah Khutbah in English

Q: I'm stuck in a weird situation. I am studying in Birmingham city university. Alhamdulillah we have been told by our elders not to criticise people from different school of thoughts than yours. I follow Deoband school and go in tabligh jamat very often. In my university saalfi brothers are trying to take over, like they made the Islamic society majorly run by them. Problem is'nt that but the problem is that for Friday jumma from last 12 years an Imam has been coming. They asked him to not come and they (students) have started to lead the jumma. They do the juma kutba which is after second azan in both English and Arabic, like they start in Arabic a bit and mostly start speaking in English. My fist question is that is khutba like this valid, secondly I've seen them doing maasa on normal socks not the leather ones and they lead the prayer is that acceptable.
