Maintaining family ties with one's abusive family

Q: I come from an abusive family. My mother believes that we should stay as a family even though my father has been abusive all my life. I wanted to know the stance in Islam, are you supposed to take the abuse to stay as a family or is it better to "break" up the family.
A: Try your level best to keep the family together and adopt a respectful and overlooking approach when dealing with your father, Allah Ta'ala will reward you all for patiently enduring his abuse. Similarly, after every salaah, make dua for his hidaayat.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
