Q: Can a woman ride on the back of a motorcycle? The man drives and the woman rides on the back.
A: We discourage women from riding on the back of such motorcycles on account of the fact that most people who ride these types of expensive and fast motorcycles ride at an extremely fast pace and for that, they will be required to wear tight fitting clothing so that the clothing does not flap with the wind while riding.
Hence, a woman riding on such a fast motorcycle will certainly not be clad wearing a burqa and concealing garments to cover her body. She will also be required to wear tight-fitting clothing. Thus, it is for this reason that we discourage women from riding on such fast motorcycles as this is not in keeping to hayaa and shame for a woman to wear such tight fitting clothing while riding a motorcycle.
Nevertheless, if a woman rides a motorcycle behind her husband, mahram, etc., and she is clad with complete purdah and loose fitting clothing that conforms to shariah, then it is permissible for her to ride on such a motorcycle behind her husband, mahram, etc. though it is better for her to be transported via a car as there is more concealment and purdah in this.
