Area below the navel becoming exposed while performing Tawaaf in ihraam

Q: When wearing the ihraam cloth and performing tawaaf around the Ka’bah Shareef, I am afraid that part of my awrah (a small area below the navel) will be visible at times, despite me wearing my ihraam belt in which I keep my money etc.

If part of my awrah is exposed, will the taawaf still be valid? Will I have to pay any compensation for it?

A: The tawaaf will be valid. However, you should exercise caution and try your level best to keep the area below your navel concealed. Perhaps you could fasten your ihraam belt more tightly.

If a small area was exposed, which is such an amount that if exposed during salaah, it will not invalidate the salaah, then in this case, damm will not have to be given, but rather sadaqah should be given.

If the amount exposed is such that its being exposed will invalidate salaah, then since a large area is exposed, damm will have to be given. However, if the tawaaf is repeated, the damm will fall off.

This law pertains to the person who is performing a fardh or waajib tawaaf. As for the one who is performing a nafl tawaaf, then in both cases, he will have to give sadaqah.

Note:

1. In all the above situations, one should make taubah for not being cautious and allowing part of his satr area to become exposed.

2. The exposed amount which will cause the salaah to be invalidated is quarter of the limb or more.

3. Sadaqah refers to the amount of sadaqatul fitr.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
