The Differences between Hajj and Umrah

Q: What are the differences between hajj and umrah?

A: The conditions for umrah are the same as the conditions for hajj and the laws of the ihraam of umrah are the same as the laws for the ihraam of hajj.

Those things that are haraam, makrooh, sunnah and mustahab in hajj, are also haraam, makrooh, sunnah and mustahab in umrah.

The following are the differences between hajj and umrah:

1. There is a specific time in the year wherein hajj is performed, whereas umrah can be performed throughout the year. There are only five days in which umrah is makrooh-e-tahreemi i.e. from the 9th of Zul Hijjah until the 13th.

2. Hajj is fardh and umrah is not fardh.

3. Hajj can be missed whereas umrah cannot be missed, because hajj is confined to the five days of hajj whereas umrah can be done at any time of the year (besides five days from the days of hajj i.e. from the 9th to the 13th. Carrying out umrah in these five days of hajj is not permissible [makrooh-e-tahreemi]).

4. In hajj, one has to make wuqoof in Arafah and Muzdalifah, pelt the jamaraat, certain salaahs are combined and there are khutbahs delivered. In umrah, these acts are not found.

5. In hajj, there is Tawaaf-e-Qudoom and Tawaaf-e-Wadaa. Both these tawaafs are not performed in umrah.

6. For the jinaayaat of nullifying the umrah or performing the tawaaf of umrah in the state of janaabah (major impurity), the slaughtering of one goat/sheep will suffice as compensation. However, one goat/sheep will not suffice as a compensation for committing these jinaayaat in hajj.

7. The meeqaat for umrah is the “Hill” (the area beyond the Haram till the meeqaat) for everybody, contrary to hajj where the people of Makkah Mukarramah tie their ihraam for hajj in the Haram. However, when an Aafaaqi (one who resides outside the meeqaat) comes from his town with the intention of performing umrah then he will tie his ihraam for umrah at his meeqaat (and not in the “Hill”).

8. In umrah, one will stop reciting the talbiyah once he commences the tawaaf. However, in hajj, one will cease reciting the talbiyah once he starts pelting the Jamaratul Aqabah.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
