Nafl salaah compensating for deficiency in the fardh salaah

Q: I read or heard something in the past that it takes some number of nafl rakaats to make up 1 fard rakaat of salaah. Is there a real number number about this?

A: The hadith explains that any deficiency in the fardh salaah will be compensated by the sunnat and nafl salaah. However, no amount has been explained as to how many sunnat and nafl salaah will be required to make up for one fardh salaah.
