Placing a line of bricks around the grave

Q:

1. Laying a layer of brick stones around a grave for identifying the presence of a grave but not building anything over the grave, is it permitted or not? Does it come under the category of a pukka grave which is prohibited in Shari'ah? We see in Jannatul Baqi that many graves have a demarcation with a layer of rock stones around them.
2. What is the meaning of the statement that 70000 dead will be taken out from a single grave on the Day of Resurrection? The numbers 7, 70, 700, 70000 are used in Hadiths and in the Quran to describe different situations. Can we take these numbers in the literal sense or do they convey any other meaning?

A:

1. In a public qabrastaan, this is not permissible as this is as if one is reserving the grave. The Sunnah method is that the grave be raised slightly  so that it can be identified.
2. If you explain the source of this Hadith from the various books of Hadith, we will be able to verify it's authenticity for you.

( ولا يجصص ) للنهي عنه ( ولا يطين ولا يرفع عليه بناء وقيل لا بأس به وهو المختار ) كما في كراهة السراجية

قال الشامي في رد المحتار : قوله ( ولا يجصص ) أي لا يطلى بالجص بالفتح ويكسر قاموس قوله ( ولا يرفع عليه بناء ) أي يحرم لو للزينة ويكره لو للإحكام بعد الدفن وأما قبله فليس بقبر إمداد وفي الأحكام عن جامع الفتاوى وقيل لا يكره البناء إذا كان الميت من المشايخ والعلماء والسادات اه قلت لكن هذا في غير المقابر المسبلة كما لا يخفى قوله ( وقيل لا بأس به الخ ) المناسب ذكره عقب قوله ولا يطين لأن عبارة السراجية كما نقله الرحمتي ذكر في تجريد أبي الفضل أن تطيين القبور مكروه و المختار أنه لا يكره اه وعزاه إليها المصنف في المنح أيضا وأما البناء عليه فلم أر من اختار جوازه وفي شرح المنية عن منية المفتي المختار أنه لا يكره التطيين وعن أبي حنيفة يكره أن يبنى عليه بناء من بيت أو قبة أو نحو ذلك لما روى جابر نهى رسول الله عن تجصيص القبور وأن يكتب عليها وأن يبنى عليها رواه مسلم وغيره (رد المحتار 2/ 237)
