Diners card

Q: Regarding the diners card, which many people take out to get access to airport lounges across the world. The cost is R695 per year. According to the website: Airport lounge entrances are part of 15 complimentary visits, provided R12 000 spend is met on your account in the quarter of your visit. A quarter is defined as the calendar months between Jan - Mar, Apr - Jun, Jul - Sep, Oct - Dec. I know Mufti saheb has mentioned that all benefits from the bank are not permissible to use such as ebucks, FNB slow lounges etc,

1) Is it permissible to obtain and use such a credit card and the associated benefits and lounges? Provided one does not earn/pay interest, and keeps a positive balance on the card.

2) A person went for jamaat where a few sathies had this card. If a cardholder has guests that also want to enter the lounge, they can pay a fee of approx R250 and enter the lounge with the cardholder. So a sathie who is very strict not to use fnb slow lounges, ebucks etc was compelled to enter as the whole jamaat was agreed on entering and he didnt want to split the jamat. This R250 fee is especially for guests of cardholders and normal people wouldnt be able to enter. Is it permissible to pay the R250 (not being a cardholder) and enter the lounge and restaurant? If a person had done so, and Mufti sb views it as impermissible, what should he do to correct his mistake?

Photo shoots

Q: For a male, is the work of a hand/foot photo shoot model permissible? For example: One will wear a watch of a certain brand. Pictures will be taken of the hand with the watch. Those pictures will then be used for advertising on billboards, in magazines etc. The same with a shoe, for example. There will be no animate images. Payment will be made per photo shoot. It will be an amount decided beforehand acceptable to both parties.

Working for a company that has an animate object as a logo

Q: I have a few questions relating to the same matter.

1. Is it permissible to work for a company where the work is halaal, but the logo of the company is in the form of a human being or animal?

2. Will his wages be halaal if he works for this company?

3. If his payslips have this logo on them, does this affect his wages?

4. If he has to where uniform which has this logo of an animate being on it, does this affect his wages?

5. Finally, what if he has to carry boxes that have this logo on it or go into the back of trucks to load or unload while the truck has this logo on it etc?

Dealing in gold

Q: I have one question regarding earnings. Is it halaal or haram. There is one company doing gold trading. If I open an account I will pay them some amount and they will open a gold account for me. Gold rates are linked with the real gold rates which are current internationally. When I buy gold from my money, I buy a lot of gold and then this gold is not physical in real. The gold purchased is from the money and if I want to sell that gold, I can get my money back (not the gold) to my account. It could be profit or loss.

Landlord asking the tenant relocate

Q: People involved in the case – The Landlord, Tenant 1 and Tenant 2.

In 1996, a shop was transferred to tenant 2 from tenant 1 with the approval of the Landlord. The Landlord didn’t have any problem as he was concerned for his monthly rent. The tenant 2 as per the business deal, and as per the local business custom, gave Tenant 1 an amount of Rs 40000, again with the approval of the Landlord, to vacate the space of the shop. Now, after 19 years the Landlord demanded a sum of 3 lac from tenant 2 or made the offer to vacate the shop and leave it. The landlord wishes to give the shop to someone else from where he can get 3 lac or so and then also the monthly rent.

1. Is it legitimate for the Tenant 2 to vacate the shop considering the sudden demands of the landlords?

2. How proper is the demand of 3 lac or any some of money by the landlord in between?

3. Even if the shop is vacated how much money should tenant 2 demand, considering he was demanded a sum of Rs 40000 in 1996 that he gave?

4. Who should give that demanded sum of money to the tenant 2 – landlord or the tenant 3?

Interest based saving schemes

Q: Pakistan is an Islamic state. I have invested some amount in government saving schemes. Although the rate of profit is fixed it is actually not because of inflation which may be more or less than the rate of profit. Besides, the actual value of my investment is going down each year due to devaluation being corresponding effect of inflation. Please guide me if the profit I receive on this investment is halaal.
